Toledo Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Toledo
Toledo is the fourth largest city in the state of Ohio and is the seat of Lucas county. It is located in northwest Ohio on the western bank of Lake Erie and it borders the state of Michigan. Founded on the Maumee River in 1833, the city was once part of the Michigan Territory but was later removed from the territory because of the Erie Canal and other developments in the area. Toledo is widely known for it's industry, specifically automobile and glass parts and assembly. For example, the American car company Jeep is headquartered in Toledo.
Because of its proximity to the Great Lakes, Toledo experiences a humid continental climate year round, and it has four distinct seasons with varying temperatures. Lake Erie keeps the city's climate quite mild and provides most of the weather effect precipitation. July is the hottest month of the year with temperatures averaging in the mid 80's Fahrenheit. January is the coldest month with temperatures averaging in the low 30's Fahrenheit.
The most popular spot of culture in Toledo is the Peristyle. The Peristyle is a concert hall that is located within the east wing of the Toledo Museum of Art. It is where the Toledo Symphony Orchestra performs and several visiting orchestras have been hosted there as well. The Peristyle's architecture is patterned after the Greek Revival style and is an excellent example of restored Greek architecture.
The museum itself is widely know and honored. The Center for Visual Arts by Frank Gehry is a recent addition and most of the museum is used to display art from local artists. There are several other things to see and do in Toledo. One of the most popular with locals and visitors alike is the Toledo Zoo, which was the first zoo in the world to display a hippoquarium exhibit. The Willis Boyer is a former Cleveland lake freighter that has been retired and opened as a museum in downtown Toledo. The R.A. Stranahan Arboretum is maintained by the University of Toledo and is one of the largest arboretum's in the northern states.
