Torrance is a city that is located along the coast in the southern portion of the state of California. It is in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County and is a lesser known beach community than its neighbors Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes Estates. The city was incorporated in 1921. It is currently the eighth largest city in Los Angeles County.

In the early 20th century Torrance was an agricultural community that grew citrus and strawberries. It had a few fish canneries and manufacturing plants, but most of the area's economy relied on the produce from local farms.

Torrance has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild temperatures year round and little rainfall. Summers are pleasant, with temperatures rarely exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are mild with temperatures staying in the 50's and 60's Fahrenheit. The area receives little rainfall, but the rainfall that it does receive comes in the months of January through March.

Torrance boasts the Del Amo Fashion Center, which is one of the largest shopping malls in the United States. Some have put it as high as second largest, only behind the Mall of America. The Torrance Cultural Arts Center hosts events and concerts year round. The Torrance Performing Arts Consortium, the Aerospace Players, and the South Bay Ballet all perform there. The Armed Forces Day Parade is the longest running military parade in the nation. It runs down the main boulevard of the city and features bands, vehicles, and community leaders.

There are several outdoor parks for the nature enthusiasts. Wilson Park is 44 acres of picnic facilities, gyms, hiking trails, biking trails, and skateparks. Madrona Marsh Wildlife Preserve and Nature Center is a wetlands habitat that also hosts gardening classes in the summer time.
