Ventura is a coastal city that is located in the southern region of the US state of California. California is the westernmost state in the continental US and is the largest state by population. Ventura is the seat of government for Ventura County and was originally named "San Buenaventura" until the name was shortened to just "Ventura" in 1891. The area of Ventura wasn’t settled by Europeans until after the US Civil War. The city was incorporated in 1866 but it remained a quiet, isolated agricultural community for must of the next century. Oil was discovered nearby in the early years of the 20th century and the Ventura Oil Field was constructed and soon became one of the most productive oil fields in the western United States. Although oil brought in considerable revenue to the area, by far the most lucrative exports from Ventura were the citrus fruits that grew so well in the fertile soil of the area. The citrus corporation SunKist Growers was created by an incorporation of the areas citrus farmers.

Ventura has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March.

The city’s location on the beach has made it very popular with tourists to southern California, in fact Ventura is famous for having some of the best surfing in southern California. Surfer’s Point is the most popular spot.
