A Traveler's Guide to Victorville

Victorville is a city that is located in the southern portion of the US state of California. It is located in San Bernardino County and is one of the fastest growing cities in the high desert region of southern California. English is the primary spoken and written language of Victorville, although a growing percentage of the population are native Spanish speakers.

The city of Victorville was founded in 1858 and named "Lane's Crossing", after Captain Lane who was a veteran of the Mexican American War. Later the city’s name was changed to Victorville in honor of Jacob Nash Victor, the general manager of the California Southern Railroad. The city grew when US Route 66 passed through it. Route 66 was the first transcontinental highway in the country and it was traveled by thousands of people each month. Recently the city has decided to renovate part of Route 66 and make it into a nationally recognized historical site. The city was incorporated in 1962.

Victorville has an arid climate, which means hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures can exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August and winter temperatures can dip below freezing for days on end. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, but most of the rainfall comes in the months of January through March.

Today Victorville is primarily visited by residents of Los Angeles who are headed to Las Vegas on Interstate 15, which runs through the city. The Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum was a memorial to the lives of two of the earliest western actors. In 2003 the museum was moved to Branson, Missouri because of a lack of revenue in Victorville.

There are several major airports within driving distance of Victorville, unfortunately most of them are in the Los Angeles area. Los Angeles International, Ontario International, Burbank, Long Beach, and Orange County John Wayne Airports are all located in the Los Angeles area.
