A Traveler's Guide to Visalia

Visalia is a city that is located in the San Joaquin Valley of the US state of California.  It is almost equidistant between San Francisco to the north and Los Angeles to the south.  It is about 30 miles closer to Los Angeles than San Francisco.  It is the 46th largest municipality in the state and the 204th largest in the nation.  The city has been called the "Gateway to the Sequoias" because of its location near the region of Sequoia National Park. It has also been called the "Jewel of the Valley" because of its prosperity in the San Joaquin Valley.  English is the official spoken and written language in Visalia, however there is a significant portion of the population that speaks Spanish.

Visalia was settled in 1852 and is one of the oldest inland settlements in the state.  It is the most important city in the agricultural region known as the Sequoia Valley.  It was originally settled by easterners seeking gold in the region, but those who were unsuccessful in their quest for gold settled in Visalia and began farming.  The area around Visalia is one of the most fertile places in the entire country for growing crops.  The city was incorporated in 1874 and has continued to grow ever since.

Visalia has a semi-Mediterranean climate, which means warm summer temperatures and mild winter temperatures.  The summers can get into the 90's Fahrenheit and winters can dip below 45 degrees from time to time.  The region receives very little rainfall in the warmer months.  Most of the areas rainfall comes during the months of January through March.

Visalia is home to the single A baseball team the Visalia Rawhide, which are a lower club of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  They compete in the California League and play their games at Recreation Park in downtown Visalia.
