A Traveler's Guide to Waco
Waco is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the US state of Texas. It is in the county of McLennan County and is located on the Brazos River. English is the primary spoken language of Waco, although there is a growing number of the population that speaks Spanish. The city was founded in 1849, but before that time the area was inhabited by Native American peoples called the"Waco" tribe. A small village was first settled on the western bank of the river near a fresh water spring. The area around it was found to be good for farming and soon farmers began growing beans, melons, pumpkins, and corn. The town was named after the people who used to live there. The construction of the Waco Suspension Bridge and the coming of Baylor University caused the town's population to increase significantly. The town has continued to grow, becoming home to several businesses and manufacturing plants over the years. It became infamous during the 1993 Waco Shootings, during which several FBI agents got into a fire fight with several Branch Davidians. During the George W. Bush presidency the city was home to the White House Press Center.
Waco has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can be hot, even reaching the 90's Fahrenheit, but winter temperatures stay relatively mild, rarely dipping below 40. The area experiences a fair amount of rainfall throughout the year, with most of the rain coming in the months of July through August.
There are several tourist attractions to see in Waco. One of the most popular is the Dr Pepper Museum. Dr Pepper was first created in Waco by Charles Alderton. The museum houses memorabilia from the soft drinks history as well as samples of different Dr Pepper products from around the world. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum honors the brave men of the Texas Rangers who kept the law in Texas prior to statehood. The Cameron Park Zoo is the largest zoo in town and one of the largest in the area.
