Waterbury is a city that is located in the central region of the US state of Connecticut. It is located on the Naugatuck River within driving distance of Hartford, Connecticut and New York City. It is the fifth largest city in Connecticut and the ninth largest city in New England. It has been given the nickname of "The Brass City" because of the large amount of brasswork products that were made in the city during the 20th century. English is the primary spoken and written language in Waterbury.

The city was originally named “Mattatock” which is an Indian word that means “place without trees”, but in 1686 the town was admitted to the colony of Connecticut and the name was changed to Waterbury. Several brass factories were built in the city and soon Waterbury became the largest producer of brass works in the country. It supplied the brass workings of the Boulder Dam in Colorado and supplied brass for the minting of coins as well. The city saw increased revenue and growth during World War 2 because of the need for brass products in the war effort.

Waterbury has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

One of the largest monument Waterbury is the Soldier’s Monument. This monument is nearly fifty feet high and is a bronze casting that honors the many local soldiers who participated in and died in the US Civil War.
